The Internet has made genealogy much easier and faster by providing many online resources, allowing us to quickly and easily find a lot of information about our ancestors.

Through genealogy, you can go back into history to meet people who have had more influence on your life than any others -- your ancestors. And the better you get to know your ancestors, the better you will get to know yourself: the who's, what's, and why's of you.

Old genealogists never die, they just lose their census.

A few tips to get you started on your own Family Tree.

The best place to start is with yourself. Write down all your information; such as, Birth, Baptism, Graduation, Degrees, Marriage, Spouse and the same information for your Children; and also include the places where these events occurred.

Be sure to interview your relatives, especially the older ones. They may have information about your ancestors that you won't find on the Internet or in any database. Make sure to write everything down or record it for future reference.

Some documents you might find, which will certainly aid your research are: Birth, Marriage, and Death certificates; obituaries; memorials; family bibles; school/university graduation certificates and awards; military service records; business papers; immigration papers; travel documents; diaries; address books; birthday books; old photographs (Label them while you or someone else knows who the people are.); letters and postcards; newspaper clippings; family memoirs; and family histories written by other family members.

What's the difference between Goldilocks and a genealogist?

A genealogist is interested in forebears.

For the new genealogist, there are many genealogy terms which may be strange to you. To get a good list of these terms go to the Genealogy Glossary at Genealogy.com. You should be able to find just about any genealogy term you don't understand.

Think About This One!
A man married a woman who had an adult daughter.
His father married the daughter.
His wife’s daughter becomes his mother
And his father becomes his son.
His wife becomes the mother-in-law of his father.
If his father and his wife’s daughter had a child,
He would become the grandfather of his brother or sister.

Your family tree is the nucleus of your family history research and putting it together can often be an exciting journey that can play out like a detective story. Maintaining this family tree information that you accumulate on paper notes may quickly become overwhelming, so, you will need to use a genealogy software program to help you keep track of the individuals in your family tree.
